Potomac Falls Vs. Loudoun County Game Summary 5/20

Panthers Promising Season Comes to Abrupt End
The Potomac Falls Panthers (14-6, 12-5 Dulles District) promising season came to an abrupt end in the first round of the Dulles District Quarterfinals. The #4-seed Panthers lost 3-2 in nine innings to the #5-seed Loudoun County Raiders. The Panthers finished the 2011 regular season one game out of first place and included a 9-game winning streak while finishing with the most total wins (14) and most district wins (12) in school history.

The Panthers had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the first inning to start things off. Senior Kaitlyn McClung walked and was sacrificed over to second by sophomore Anna Zembar. Junior Carlyn Hanzel (1-4) singled up the middle but shortstop Alison Coates made a diving stop keeping the ball from going into the outfield. McClung rounded third and was waved home and subsequently thrown out at the plate. Junior Lauren Fulcher (1-3, run) walked before senior Heather Kiefer (1-4, run) lined out to short to end the inning. Raiders scored first in the top of the third inning with a leadoff double by Courtney Amos (2-4, 2 doubles), a sacrifice, and an infield RBI ground-out. Raiders pitcher Kiley Jacobus held the Panthers scoreless for five innings until the Panthers scored an unearned run in the sixth inning. Fulcher got on by a dropped fly ball, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an overthrow to third on Kiefer’s ground-out. The score remained tied 1-1 until the ninth inning. The Raiders lead off hitter Renay Aubel was hit by a pitch, and Kelley Duerback (3-3, 2 doubles) doubled to right putting runners on second and third before a fielder’s choice resulted in Aubel being thrown out by shortstop Caitie McClay. With two out, Amos hit her second double of the night to score two runs and the Raiders took a 3-1 lead. The Panthers were not done. In the bottom of the ninth, Kiefer led off the inning with a line drive single off the first baseman’s glove and advanced to second on a ground-out. Senior Kayla Guttridge was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Junior Peyton Valentine (1-4, rbi) singled to right and Kiefer scored from second on a slide by and the runners advanced to second and third. Jacobus stranded the runners by striking out the last two batters she faced for the win. Kiefer took the loss on 7 hits while striking out 8 and walking 1.

Potomac Falls at Briar Woods Game Summary 5/19

Potomac Falls Drops Regular Season Finale
The Potomac Falls Panthers (14-5, 12-4 Dulles District) ended its regular season falling to Briar Woods 7-0. The loss drops the Panthers from a four-way tie for first into fourth place – one game behind the district leaders Briar Woods, Woodgrove and Broad Run. The Panthers had four hits against Falcons pitcher Macy Jones who struck out 16 batters. The Panthers were led on offense by senior Kaitlyn McClung (1-3), sophomore Anna Zembar (1-3), freshman Tiffany Barndt (1-2), and junior Carlyn Hanzel. The Falcon outfielders also made two spectacular diving catches to take away two potential Panther hits.

Potomac Falls finishes the regular season with the most wins (total and district) in school history and will host a first round district quarterfinal game on Friday (5/ 20) against Loudoun County. The Panthers won both regular season game match-ups against the Lady Raiders.

Potomac Falls Vs. Woodgrove Game Summary 5/13

Woodgrove Drops Potomac Falls Into Four Way Tie for First
The Potomac Falls Panthers (14-4, 12-3 Dulles District) squandered an opportunity to extend their lead in the Dulles District and lost a close game rematch with Woodgrove. Potomac Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Panthers defense allowed four unearned runs on six errors to drop into a four-way tie for first place with Briar Woods, Woodgrove and Broad Run. The Panthers were led on offense by junior Caitie McClay (3-3, double, 2 RBIs) and senior Heather Kiefer (1-3, RBI). Senior Kaitlyn McClung (1-4), junior Carlyn Hanzel (1-3, run) and freshman Tiffany Barndt (1-3) also had hits.

With two outs in the top of the first inning Hanzel and junior Lauren Fulcher got on base with back-to-back walks. Kiefer laced a single pass the third baseman to score Hanzel from second followed by McClay who doubled to right center to drive in two more runs for a 3-0 Panther lead. The Wolverines responded in the bottom half of the inning with two unearned runs of their own on two infield errors and a wild pitch. The score remained 3-2 until the Wolverines tied it up in the bottom of the fifth inning on two back-to-back infield singles by C. Bogar (1-4, run) and A. Cole (2-4, 2 runs) followed by an infield error. In the bottom of the seventh Woodgrove’s lead-off batter Cole singled and advanced to second on a ground-out. With two outs, R. Harris laced a line drive that ricocheted off the first baseman’s glove into short right field while Cole scored on the play from second to end the game.

The Panthers last regular season game is away at Briar Woods on Tuesday (5/17) with first place in the Dulles District on the line.
